  • Pesticide and Bio-fertilizer Analysis

For over three decades, India the agricultural sector has depended and relied on inorganic fertilizers and pesticides for food production. Because of the lack of an effective and locally available fertilizer and pesticides technologies, India resorted to the importation of 85% of the total inorganic fertilizer and more than 90% of pesticide requirements. Large amounts of foreign exchange spent on importation have contributed to the stagnant and limited growth of our economy. It is in this regard that biofertilizer and bio-pesticide research in the the country was undertaken in the late 70s to come up with more cost-efficient and local alternatives to imported fertilizers and pesticides The population explosion has escalated the pressure on higher productivity per unit of land. Modern agriculture emphasized using hybrid seeds, high yielding varieties that are highly responsive to large doses of chemical fertilizers, pesticides and irrigation. This has resulted in soil being deprived of essential plant nutrients and nourishing organic matter that had always been available to plants when natural farming was being practiced historically. Chemical fertilizers which are now being used extensively since the Green revolution have depleted soil health by making the soil ecology non - inhabitable for soil microflora and microfauna which are largely responsible for maintaining soil fertility and providing some essential and indispensable nutrients to plants. It has now become imperative to restore the soil with a beneficial microbe population by using Bio-Fertilizers, pesticides

Pro And Cons of pesticides and biofertilizers

    The advantages of biofertilizers, pesticides

    1. It helps achieve higher crop yields while also enhancing soil health
    2. Replace the chemical fertilizers, which are not beneficial for long-term plant health, and can be toxic to the environment and consumers
    3. Biofertilizer production may be performed as a by-product of electricity generation from biogas
    4. Exclusive use of biofertilizers keep soils chemical free and helps maintain natural fertility
    5. They combat pathogens in both soil and plant and work as a natural pesticide
    6. They are relatively easy to apply
    7. Help combat the effects of drought and other restrictive conditions

    The disadvantages of biofertilizers

    1. Biofertilizers provide lower nutrient density than chemical fertilizers, so more product is often required for the same effect
    2. Biofertilizer production requires specific machinery
    3. Biofertilizers can be difficult to store and may have a much shorter shelf-life than chemical fertilizers
    4. Biofertilizers are often plant specific; what works on one crop does not work on another
    5. Biofertilizers can have a strong, distinctive odour
